This review is focused on Edelweiss German Restaurant.Everyone knows the Rathskeller is a good place for German food and spirits. But I wanted to find a different place, somewhere new.Edelweiss is part of the German-American Klub and is tucked away in the back of German Park on the south side. The Elizabethan style architecture, German phrases on the wall, and Biergarten assembled a cozy European atmosphere. There weren’t many people there, despite our reservation, but those present carried on their conversations like old friends.
We sat outside where the tree covered patio faced the secluded park.Call it good timing but we had live entertainment as the Klub was hosting a pie auction to raise money. The friendly waitress helped me select a tall glass of Spaten. I started my meal with a thick potato and vegetable soup.Leading into the main course, I cannot remember the name of what I ordered (maybe pork schnitzel) but it was perfectly combined with my side item choices of cinnamon apples and mashed potatoes.
Jen got her fix with some kind of sausage served with sauerkraut, potato pancakes served with apple sauce, and German potato salad. Each main course costs around $15-$20.We chatted with our server a little and ended up talking ourselves into getting dessert!I ordered the custardy bread pudding, which is served with a distinct yet sweet whisky sauce.Jen took her cherry strudel to-go.The food and service was above decent and the delightful atmosphere earned Edelweiss 4 out of 5 stars. Jen gave it 5 out of 5 stars. She loves Germany food!!!!
